Great post! In the comment about walled gardens where you mention that simulations environments cost thousands of dollars to license, I assume you are talking about MuJoCo? If so, DeepMind took over MuJoCo recently and open-sourced it. I can't think of any other popular simulation environments that are not open-source or available for free.
Yeah I'm super excited to see them open source that. This article was written before then, let me update it to reflect the change. Talking to people at DM they really are taking it in the right direction (though RL research needs a new frontier that is more challenging and diverse!)
